The Dunlop Newcastle Northern junior open , sponsored by Quality Solicitors, Lawson and Thompson was held on 11th/12th May 2013 and it proved to be a successful tournament for local players in the nine different categories.
In the under 11 boys event, local number 1 seed, Dan Neil from Jesmond, lost narrowly in the final to up and coming Matthew Harrison from Cumbria and in the girls event Jesmond had another finalist where Beth Dean beat Naomi Appleby from Northern.
The under 13 girls event saw Northern player Erin Vitty lose to highly ranked Lucinda Cross from Cleveland and the boys event was an all Jesmond affair with Max Forster beating Matthew Carr.
Home club Northern had its first successes at under 15 level with Michael Mattimore storming through the competition before beating Oliver Walls from Cleveland in the final and Josie Barker toppling the higher ranked Laura Neil from Jesmond in the final of the girls event.
Tynemouth had its only finalist when Jamie Todd won the boys under 17 boys event , beating Joe Dale from Cleveland in the final and then there was an all Jesmond final in the girls under 17 event , where Georgia Webster caused an upset by defeating county number 1, Charlotte Cooper.
The boys under 19 final was the last event and the quality of the squash was amazing. Home club favorite and current county champion, Cai younger beat Dan Wareing in the final.
As always the plate events for first round losers proved to be very popular and also provided some local success. The plate winners were Dylan Mason(Primrose), Liam Duncan-Kahn(Northern), Angus Forster(Jesmond), Sam Broughton(Northern), Josh Askew(Northern), Olivia Steanson(Primrose), Lucy Anderson(Northern), Martha Spalding(Jesmond) and Caitlin Vitty(Northern). The runners up were Abdallah Eissa(Northern), James Appleby(Northern), Joe Wareing(Jesmond), Sam Hill(Cleveland), Lewis Wake(Northern), Eve Hardie(Primrose), Catriona Watling(Northern), Daisy Dobson(Tynemouth) and Amy Rowell(Primrose).
Tournament organiser and head coach at Northern, Richard Vitty said, "This event is now one of the most popular in the regional calendar and for local players to win all but one of the nine events shows how strong junior squash is in Newcastle."
