Gosforth Academy under 19 boys and girls make national school finals

Richard Vitty - Wed 24 Apr 2013

Not to be outdone by the under 15 teams the under 19 boys and girls made it to the finals of the national schools squash championships in Manchester.

Gosforth Academy under 19 boys and girls teams both qualified for this season`s national schools squash finals at the national squash centre in Manchester. The girls team of Tegan Younger, Josie Barker, Caitlin Vitty, Ellie Watling , Sophie Noble and Anna Watling lost in their semi-final against arch rivals Dame Allans , also of Newcastle , and then lost a very tight 3rd / 4th play off match to finish fourth. The boys squad of Elliot Carr , Alex Robertson, Michael Mattimore , Sam Broughton, Lewis Wake , Sam Birch-Machin and Josh Askew won their semi final comfortably against Dr. Challoners from Northamptonshire and went into the final against the superstars from Millfield school , coached by Jonah Barrington!! Sam Broughton and Lewis Wake got the Academy off to a great start by winning their matches 3-0 but Millfield had the English number 1 ( under 19 ) and two world ranked Iraeli players as their top three. Michael , Alex and Elliot fought valiantly but all lost 3 – 0 . It should be noted that these three top players are scholarship students and also that they are older than the Academy boys so the future is bright !
