Walking Squash is proving to be a resounding success at Northern Squash Club, with enthusiastic participation across three sessions prompting organisers to expand the programme's scope and ambitions.
Initially developed to help players with physical restrictions remain active on court, the concept has evolved significantly since its introduction, according to coach Bob Aynsley, who has been leading the sessions.
"What we've discovered is that participants aren't necessarily restricted in the way we first anticipated," explains Aynsley. "We're seeing people returning from injury, newcomers developing their ability, and experienced players who simply want a different approach to the game. Everyone takes from Walking Squash what meets their personal objectives."
The format, which emphasises tactical play and controlled movement over explosive athleticism, aligns perfectly with England Squash's commitment to engaging players of all ages and abilities with the sport. By removing the high-intensity physical demands whilst maintaining competitive elements, Walking Squash is opening doors for a broader demographic.
The response has exceeded expectations, with all three sessions generating what Aynsley describes as "absolute enthusiasm" from participants. The positive reception has encouraged organisers to continue developing the concept, and they remain open to suggestions for further refinement.
Following a brief summer break to accommodate holidays, the programme will resume with the next session scheduled for Sunday 27th July at 6:20pm.
"We continue to learn with each session," notes Aynsley. "This is very much an evolving concept, and we're excited to see where player feedback takes us next."
The success of Walking Squash at Northern Squash Club demonstrates the appetite for innovative approaches to traditional racquet sports, potentially paving the way for similar programmes at clubs nationwide.
