Overview

Team squash consists of 5 players in a team, seeded from 1 to 5 in order of ability. Matches consist of each numbered seed playing their matching opponent. There are generally 8 to 10 teams in a division, and teams play each other home and away over the course of the season. The season generally runs from September to April.

Northern Squash Club runs around 10 teams in the Northumbria County Squash Leagues, and play home and away against clubs as far afield as Alnwick to the north, Hexham to the west, Tynemouth to the east and Sunderland and Consett to the south. We currently have 6 men's teams and 1 junior team in the men's league and 3 ladies teams in the ladies league. Typically, a team will play around 16-18 matches in a season (mid September through to mid April).

Teams consist of 5 players, ranked in order of playing ability, decided at the start of the season (September). Playing orders can be changed at the mid-season break – around Christmas time. A team match consists of 5 individual ties – each player playing their opposite number in a best of 5 games match. A team earns a point for every individual game won. The team winning the most ties earns 5 bonus points. Therefore, the maximum points that can be earned in a match are 20 points.

The social side is an important part of team squash – post match food is provided by the host club, accompanied by a drink or 2 and plenty of banter.

Summer 2014 saw the first County Summer leagues – similar format as above, but with similar strength teams where a club has more than 1 team, and smaller leagues. Northern entered 4 teams in summer 2014.
