Squash Etiquette

Squash etiquette

We aim to promote a friendly, respectful environment here at the club. Please review these etiquette guidelines to help ensure fair play and enjoyment for all:

Arrival

Please arrive in plenty of time for the booked court, changed and ready to play with a ball and payment (if you did not book the court or paid your share online).

Attire

Clean non-marking court shoes and suitable sports clothing must be worn. Protective eyewear is highly recommended.

Hydration

Closed water bottles are permitted on court, but food (including chewing gum) and open drinks must be consumed off court.

Court Access

Carefully close the door once on court and take care not to slam it, to prevent damage.

Warm-Up

Both players should warm up together for 4-5 minutes, fairly alternating the ball after 2-4 shots, and swapping sides half way through. The warm-up is for preparation, not competition!

Game Play

Give your opponent space for a backswing and follow through, and access to hit the ball directly onto the front wall. Avoid hitting them with your racket or ball and moving into their line to reach a ball. Try to be honest and call your own fouls/hindrances. Please remember to respect your opponent - be mindful of this when discussing lets/strokes/no lets. If you can't agree, a let is usually the fairest outcome.

Keeping score - it is recommended you agree the score between points to avoid any misunderstandings later on.

League Games

The default scoring system is best of 5 games, point-a-rally (PAR) to 15 (sudden death at 14 all). You can both agree an alternative e.g. PAR to 11 (2 clear at 10 all). If the match is unfinished when the court time expires, agree with your opponent the next step (e.g. complete the match if there's a spare court, record score using completed games, replay or finish the match at a later date).

Fair Time

Limit time between games to 90 seconds. On court, play should be as continuous as possible - between points, move quickly to serve or receive the next point (with the player nearest to the ball retrieving it en route). Avoid excessive bouncing of the ball before serving.

If the match is completed early, keep playing to use the time paid for.

Noise Control

Please avoid loud voices/sounds off court, and change/warm up discreetly to respect others playing. And keep language respectful!

Facility Care

Discard rubbish in bins. Return glasses to the bar. Leave spaces clean and chairs/tables free of bags etc. Keep changing room floors dry.

We promote a competitive yet cooperative environment. Enjoy yourself, support your fellow members, and uphold excellent sportsmanship!
