Minutes of the Squash Executive Committee Meeting held on 5th August 2024

1 - ATTENDANCE

3 - MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING

  • Minutes of the Meeting 8th July 2024 agreed.

4 - MATTERS ARISING/ACTION POINTS

4.1 - Action Point Update:

  • 5 (8/7/24) Marc – Has informed members of revised England Squash membership changes from 19th August and displayed information around the club.
  • 5 (8/7/24) Marc – Has contacted Wayne to ensure Wazygoose updated with membership categories and associated fees for 2024/2025 season.
  • 5 (8/7/24) Marc – Has advised members of renewals via Wazygoose.

4.2 - Dashboard

  • Marc reported that £1,743.75 has been transferred to the Treasurer for court bookings.
  • No new memberships in July.
  • Total to Club £10,818 for period Jan-end July 2024
  • Membership 196
  • Squash account remains healthy
  • Marc reported that the Summer League team is doing well.

4.3 - Squash News

  • Marc advised the Committee that he had attended - along with Kevin, Mandy and Tracey - the Northern Open Competition run by Cai Younger, to see how it is run and whether Boldon could participate in future. He reported that there had been 56 entries and matches were played over one day, people being grouped according to squash levels.
  • Marc reported that he and Kevin had met with Cai Younger in our club on Sunday 4th August to look at our facilities and discuss how and when he would like to run one of the open competitions at Boldon. The next scheduled one is at Tynemouth squash club on Saturday 28th September.
  • Cai would like to run one at Boldon on Saturday 16th November between 9am-7pm (ish).
  • Marc has approached Mark Flynn to see if Vertu Ducati would be willing to sponsor the event, potentially to be able to offer prize money.
  • Squash member Paul Craigs (Pizza Man) is to be approached to provide food for purchase in the evening.
  • The Committee will look at ways to enable refreshments and sandwiches to be purchased during the competition in the squash club prior to the Club Bar opening.

4.4 - Squash club maintenance/improvement

  • Marc reported repointing of the exterior walls is underway, may take at least two weeks to complete.
  • Kevin reported that once the repointing is finished he will ask Colin (electrician) to undertake the electrical work needed to Court 4 fan; the socket wire; and replacement of the consumer unit.
  • Mandy reported there had been no member feedback.
  • Cleaning is adequate but still needs improvement. Mandy asked if an alternative company quote could be sought, potentially approaching Christian James’s step daughter who runs a cleaning company, to which the Committee agreed. ACTION Mandy – seek alternative quote.

4.5 - Club Executive Committee Feedback

  • Club Current Account £33,300 and Reserve Account £30k.
  • First 6 months of the year sales up £18k from last year – attributed to Bar sales, bingo and squash contribution.
  • Gas/Electric costs were £12,500 Jan-Jun.
  • VAT bill of £6k due.
  • 40 new social members.
  • Weather has hampered cricket match schedule.
  • Installation of new cricket nets completed.
  • New website for Club being put together.
  • Chris Ellison has promised to check out the leak in the old kitchen.
  • Storage being investigated for squash needs.
  • New tills configured and installed.
  • New pool table being bought.
  • Revised maintenance list and priorities to be collated.Function room booked for Handicap Competition Finals Night – Saturday 14th December, including live band.
  • Lights for driveway to be purchased and installed end of cricket season.

5 - AOB

  • Connor asked whether Team games in the new season would be rescheduled whilst the club Handicap Competition is being run. Kevin confirmed that the matches are to be rescheduled.
  • Marc reminded the Team Captains present (Connor and Russ) to ask their team players to sign up with England Squash prior to the season starting.
  • Kevin reported that the Handicap Auction is scheduled for Sunday 24th November.
  • Kevin reported he is still waiting for confirmation from Dave Elsender about the friendly between Boldon v Westoe.
  • Marc reported that the shower tray in the Men’s Changing room is unstable and needs fixing. ACTION Marc – To contact the firm who installed the shower tray to have it fixed asap.
