World Squash Day 2012

The London Olympics was a huge success this year, with Team GB grapping 65 medals! Unfortunately we could not watch James Willstrop, Nick Mathew or Gregory Gaultier fighting for Olympic gold on the BBC this year; however we are now looking ahead to the 2020 Olympics, which we believe is the golden year for squash.

World Squash Day has launched a "Back the Bid 2020" campaign to help promote and qualify squash as an Olympic Game. This follows a similar event held in 2009 called "Squash for 2016" which was designed to support squash’s bid for a place in the Olympics. Their website also explains why the foundation was launched in 2002 in honour of Derek Sword a former Scottish Junior International.

Northern’s contribution to World Squash Day (to help with the bid for squash to be included in the 2020 Olympics) was to participate in a global team match. We had 22 entries and players were split into the 2 teams (“Team Squash” and “Team 2020”). Each individual match consisted of best of 3 games (PAR scoring to 20). Every match was a close fought contest (8 of the 11 matches being decided on a 3rd game). The winning team, for the Northern sub-match, was “Team Squash”, by a margin of 8-3. This result (along with results from over 600 other clubs) has been fed into the global team match, for an overall winning team to be decided.

Thanks to all those who participated in this fun team event. Hopefully, Northern has done its bit for a successful Olympic bid.
